We have been busy over the last few weeks tying on our vines to their new tutors.
With 1.8m wooden canes in the ground, this gives our vines plenty of space to climb and make full use of our (slightly) sunny summer ☀️

One mistake and 2 years of work wiped away.

We’ve been busy in the vineyard keeping on top of the weeds. In an attempt to reduce our herbicide use we are back to strimming. This is a painful process and can have some consequences but it’s worth it to increase our sustainability.

For those who haven’t met me yet…

I’m Jesse 👋

Initially following the natural progression from my Accounting & Finance degree, the plan was to move to London. However, I knew it wasn’t quite right for me. I’ve always had a passion about food and wine and after a long conversation with the old man, whilst canoeing down the beautiful Wye Valley, I decided to pursue a different path.

I founded Abergavenny Vineyards in October 2022. I had no real idea about the industry, but I was inspired by our award winning neighbouring vineyards. Our south facing family farm in Abergavenny was the perfect place to start.

On 2nd June 2023 we planted our first vines! 🍇 I haven’t looked back since.

Everyday I’m learning something new, but with an incredible support network of family and friends it’s been a difficult but an extremely enjoyable journey and I’ve definitely found my true passion 🥳

We’re planning on opening our doors this year to the public so I look forward to seeing you soon!

We’ve been busy last week pruning our orchards ✂️🍏

Over the course of the week we’ve methodically gone through our medlars, plums and all the apples. We are currently aiming to shape the trees for the future, enabling quick and efficient harvests for many years to come!

We will start our vineyard pruning in March, delayed as much as possible to help delay bud burst and mitigate frost risk ❄️

One of many natural techniques implemented, all in an aim to improve our sustainability going forward!

This magnificent 150 year old tree fell across our main drive blocking our access and also access for our neighbours and the frequent users of the footpath. 😬

After 2 days of careful work with a team of men, several chainsaws and a telehandler, we have managed to remove all the limbs and leave just the trunk, which at about 50” in diameter, is too big for us to handle!

All the wood so far has either been taken for firewood or to be chipped for biomass, making sure it’s not wasted.

Time to get some experts in or maybe turn the remaining trunk into a feature? Any suggestions are more than welcome 😁

We are proud to have planted one of the UK’s largest medlar orchards, this is the first year that they have produced fruit so we’re excited!

Medlars are fruits that were very popular through the ages due to their late ripening and bletting process that enable natural sugars to be available going into winter.

They have since been dying off across the UK but with delicious products like medlar jelly, medlar cheese and medlar based alcohols, we want to make sure that they don’t disappear for good!

This year will be an experiment into what works well - some exciting experiments in the kitchen to come 😁

After we planted the vines we left the soil to work it’s magic and we have just been mechanically keeping on top of the weeds with a topper and lots of strimming work.

It’s been 100% worth it as you can see!

I can happily report that out of 4100 Pinot noir planted, only 42 are not showing signs of growth! They may never grow or they could just be dormant until next year… only time will tell.

That puts our potential mortality rate at
just 1.02% 😁

Abergavenny Vineyards was founded in 2022 with the goal to produce sustainable and eco-friendly wines on the base of the Sugar Loaf Mountain, just outside of Abergavenny. The UK is rapidly showing it’s worth internationally in the wine industry, but the majority of vineyards are English. We aim to prove that the natural Welsh resources available to us will create wines that, not only are delicious, but also come at a very affordable price 🍷
